ambrose burnside, american civil war general, was noted for his inept command of union forces. during the battle of antietam in 1862, he ordered his troops to cross the potomac river in order to engage the confederate forces in battle. they correspondingly marched across the bridge two abreast, making an ideal target for confederate gunners flanking the bridge. not surprisingly, the slaughter was appalling.
burnside had failed to notice that the river was only waist deep, and could easily have been crossed almost anywhere else in perfect safety.

【 附 注 】 伯 恩 赛 德 除 了 以 领 军 无 能 着 称 ， 其 浓 密 的 连 鬓 颊 须 也 脍 炙 人 口 。 sideburns （ 颊 须 ） 一 字 ， 就 是 脱 胎 自 burniside 。 例 如 ： i told him to shave off his heavy sideburns （ 我 叫 他 把 浓 密 的 颊 须 剃 掉 ） 。
inept 是 「 笨 拙 的 」 或 「 无 能 的 」 ， 例 如 ： instead of having our car repaired, the inept mechanic further damaged it （ 那 技 工 很 无 能 ， 没 有 把 我 们 的 汽 车 修 理 好 ， 反 而 弄 得 更 糟 ） 。 英 文 本 来 没 有 ept （ 灵 巧 的 、 机 敏 的 ） 字 ， 近 人 取 inept 而 作 ept ， 但 这 个 字 远 远 没 有 inept 那 么 通 用 ， 一 般 字 典 都 不 收 录 。
