to the americans' astonishment, when carleton issued an order that every able-bodied man in the area take up arms, most of them did so willingly, including the french-canadians. they fought with carleton to defeat the americans, ending the hope of canadian support for the american revolution.

had the battle gone differently, canada could have become the 14th colony.
