"in january 1942, i received my call-up papers," british actor and director peter ustinov once recalled. "at my selection board interview, i was asked if i had any preferences as to the arm i wished to serve in. i told the officer i was interested in tanks. his eyes blazed with enthusiasm. 'why tanks?' he asked keenly. i replied that i preferred to go into battle sitting down.
"his sparkle faded abruptly, and i soon thereafter received a letter ordering me to report to an infantry regiment."

【附 注 】 call-up 是 「 征 兵 令 」 ， to call somebody up 即 「 征 召 某 人 入 伍 」 ， 例 如： （ 1 ） he got his call-up in 2003, and left for iraq （ 他 二 ○ ○ 三 年 接 到军 方 征 召 令 ， 动 身 赴 伊 拉 克 ） 。 （ 2 ） the army called up the reservists （ 军方 征 召 后 备 军 人 ） 。
arm 可 解 作 「 兵 种 」 ， 包 括 步 兵 、 炮 兵 、 空 军 等 ， 例 如： he joined the air / artillery arm at the outbreak of the war （ 战 争 爆发 ， 他 加 入 了 空 军 ╱ 炮 兵 队 ） 。
blaze 指 「 火 焰 」 或 「 光 辉 」 ， 副 词 （ adverb ） 是 ablaze ， 例 如 ： his eyes were ablaze with enthusiasm （ 他 很 兴 奋 ， 眼 睛 发 亮 ） 。
