in june 1189 king henry Ⅱ of england was facing an attack from the french under philip Ⅱ in league with henry's son, richard, later known as the lionheart. henry was retreating from le mans and richard was leading the pursuit. but so precipitate was the chase that richard had neglected to wear his armour and when he caught up with henry's rearguard he found it was commanded by william marshal, a most highly regarded knight. marshal wheeled back to face richard and toppled him from his horse.
richard, knowing the reputation of this great knight, pleaded: “ by the legs of god, marshal, do not kill me! i am not armed. ” marshal looked at him scornfully for a moment and then, instead of striking him, plunged his lance into richard's horse. “ no, i will not kill you, ” he said, “ but i hope the devil will. ”

一一 八 九 年 六 月 ， 英 王 亨 利 二 世 遭 法 王 腓 力 二 世 军 队 攻 击 。 亨 利 的 儿 子 理 查 后 来 号 称狮 心 王 ， 当 时 和 腓 力 勾 结 ， 见 亨 利 从 勒 芒 撤 退 ， 就 率 兵 追 赶 ， 匆 忙 间 没 有 穿 上 甲 冑。 他 追 上 亨 利 的 后 卫 ， 看 见 威 廉 ． 马 歇 尔 负 责 殿 后 。 马 歇 尔 是 名 震 一 时 的 武 士 ， 掉转 马 头 ， 迎 战 理 查 ， 把 他 击 堕 马 下 。 理 查 知 道 这 位 武 士 的 威 名 ， 求 饶 说 ： 「 天 可 怜见 ， 马 歇 尔 ， 饶 我 一 命 吧 。 我 没 有 武 装 。 」 马 歇 尔 一 脸 鄙 夷 神 气 ， 望 了 望 他 ， 没 下杀 手 ， 只 是 一 矛 刺 进 理 查 的 坐 骑 身 上 ， 说 ： 「 好 吧 ， 饶 你 不 死 ， 但 我 希 望 魔 鬼 取 你性 命 。 」
【 附 注 】 league 是 「 联 盟 」 ， in league with someone 就 是 「 与某 人 联 盟 」 ， 常 指 联 手 做 坏 事 ， 例 如 ： the capitalists are in league with the communists （ 资 本 家 和 共 产 党 勾 结 ） 。
