In Nazi-occupied Europe, many resistance groups received help from the Allies in the form of secret agents and weapons. Contact with the home base in Britain was vital, and a trained radio operator, transmitting in Morse code from a suitcase-sized set, was a key need in any group. German detector vans cruised through town streets and country roads to try and get bearings on the clandestine transmitters. In the radio war, the great aim for the Germans was to capture the operator and force him or her to send home false messages. In the celebrated Operation North Pole, Germany's Abwehr Colonel Giskes achieved precisely this, calling for ever more supplies to be sent into Holland from Britain. In 1942-43 no fewer than 52 agents and a vast tonnage of weapons and explosives were dropped in by British aircraft, only to be netted immediately on arrival.
