the crimean war broke out in 1854 between russia and an alliance of britain, france and turkey. during the battle of inkermann in 1855, major hugh clifford of the british cavalry leapt some bushes on his horse only to find himself confronted by two russian cavalrymen. he knocked down one with his horse and then slashed the other across the arm with his sword before making his escape.
two days later he was visiting his brigade hospital when he noticed some prisoners, one of whom had had his arm amputated. on seeing clifford the russian smiled and waved his uninjured arm, explaining through an interpreter that clifford was the man who had cut off his arm. apparently he bore the major no ill will at all.

一八 五 四 年 ， 克 里 米 亚 战 争 爆 发 ， 交 战 双 方 一 是 俄 国 ， 一 是 英 、 法 、 土 耳 其 联 军 。 一八 五 五 年 英 克 曼 之 役 ， 英 国 骑 兵 少 校 休 ． 克 利 福 德 驱 马 跃 过 矮 树 丛 ， 赫 然 看 见 两 名俄 国 骑 兵 就 在 面 前 。 他 策 马 撞 倒 一 人 ， 并 挥 剑 砍 伤 另 一 人 手 臂 ， 全 身 而 退 。
两 天 后 ， 他 到 军 旅 医 院 探 望 ， 看 见 有 些 俘 虏 ， 其 中 一 人 切 除 了 一 只 手 。 那 俄国 人 见 到 克 利 福 德 ， 含 笑 举 起 没 有 受 伤 的 手 ， 向 他 摇 了 摇 ， 经 由 翻 译 员 解 释 说 ， 他一 只 手 就 是 克 利 福 德 砍 断 的 。 他 对 克 利 福 德 显 然 一 点 都 不 怀 恨 。
【 附 注 】 leap （ 跳 ） 一 般 作 不 及 物 动 词 （ intransitive verb ） ， 不 可 直接 受 词 （ object ） ； 假 如 作 及 物 动 词 （ transitive verb ） ， 则 解 作 「 跳 过 」 。 he leapt some bushes 和 he leapt over some bushes 同 义 。 leap 的 过 去 式 是 leapt 或 leaped 。
