The defence of Hougoumont by a British brigade at the Battle of Waterloo witnessed many courageous acts. The Duke of Wellington wrote after the battle:"No troops could have held Hougoumont but the British, and only the best of them." Among those"best soldiers", Sergeant James Graham stood out as being exceptional. But in the thick of the fight, Graham asked permission of his commanding officer to retire for a moment. The officer replied,"By all means, Graham; but I wonder you should ask leave now." Graham answered,"I would not, sir, only my brother is wounded and he is in that barn there, which has just caught fire." He ran to the blazing spot, lifted up his brother, and laid him in a ditch. Then he was back at his post, and was plying his musket against the French again.
