richard the lionheart was a legendary warrior but a poor king. in 1199, while besieging the castle of chalus, he was fatally shot in the shoulder by an arrow. the castle being taken, richard ordered bertram de gourdon, who had shot the arrow, to be brought into his presence. “ what harm did i ever do thee, ” he asked, “ that thou shouldst kill me ? ”
bertram replied with courage. “ you killed with your own hand my father and two of my brothers. you may take your revenge. i should cheerfully suffer all the torments that can be inflicted were i sure of having delivered the world of a tyrant who filled it with carnage. ”

richard was stricken with remorse. he ordered the prisoner to be presented with one hundred marks and set free.
例 如 : the police arrived to find a scene of terrible carnage ( 警 察 到 场 , 只 见 处 处 尸 骸 , 怵 目 惊 心 ) 。
