托马斯.怀特(1503~1542)曾就读于剑桥大学圣约翰学院。一生大部分时间担任宫廷大臣和外交工作。他对外国文学尤其是意大利文学兴趣甚浓，这从他翻译并模仿意大利诗人皮特拉克(petrarch)等的十四行诗中可见一斑。他是把十四行诗这一诗歌形式引入英国诗坛的第一人。他的十四行诗的题材大多取自从皮特拉克十四行诗所得到的灵感。他与萨里伯爵(henry howard, earl of surrey )的作品，“是英国文学史上最重要的作品之一，因为正是通过他们，欧洲文艺复兴时期诗歌的主流才得以涌入不列颠群岛。”
