the british regular soldier in the napoleonic wars had a toughness that was proverbial. he was intolerant of those who did not share his stoicism in the face of suffering. one such soldier, awaiting treatment in a british field hospital, was angry at the screams of a french casualty lying alongside him. as soon as the frenchman's arm had been amputated, the british soldier seized the severed limb by the wrist and hit the frenchman a sharp blow with it, saying, “ here, take that, and stuff it down your throat and stop your damned bellowing. ”

【 附 注 】 proverb 是 「 谚 语 」 ； 谚 语 流 传 人口 ， 所 以 proverbial 有 「 脍 炙 人 口 」 的 意 思 ， 例 如 ： he was fascinated by the proverbial splendour of the alps （ 阿 尔 卑 斯 山 非 常 壮 观 ， 天 下 传 诵 ， 他 也 为之 迷 ） 。
stoicism 本 是 古 希 腊 哲 学 家 芝 诺 （ zeno ） 所 创 学 派 ， 以 坚 忍 、 冷 静 为 。 芝 诺 在 廊 下 授 业 ， 而 希 腊 文 称 「 廊 」 为 stoa ， 这 就 是 学 派 名 称 的 由 来 。 今 天 ， stoic 常 用 来 说 坚 忍 、 禁 欲 者 ， 也 可 作 形 容 词 ， 例 如 ： he faced every adversity with a stoic / stoical attitude （ 他 面 临 逆 境 总 是 抱 坚 忍 态 度 ） 。
