the lusitania was a british ocean liner that was torpedoed and sunk by a german submarine during the first world war. in may 1915, the ship left new york city for liverpool. unknown to her passengers but probably no secret to the germans, she was carrying munitions and contraband destined for the british war effort. of those on board, 761 were rescued, while 1198 perished.
the lusitania's passengers included alfred vanderbilt, one of the world's richest men. his last acts on earth were to give his own life jacket to a woman, and to tie life jackets to wicker baskets holding infants in an attempt to save them. the rising water carried the baskets off the ship, but none survived the turbulence created as the ship sank to the bottom. the sea also claimed vanderbilt, who had never learned to swim.
