during the 18th century the punishment of flogging was very common in the british army. it could be imposed for the most absurd of reasons.
on one occasion, a company major was giving a reading at church parade. his broad yorkshire accent amused some of the men and when he read the words “ suffered under pontius pilate, one of the men, a known wag, muttered, “ what's ponchews peelatt? ” the officer heard the comment, and turned to look at the culprit. “ up to your old tricks again, are you jock? ” the major summoned jock to a drumhead court-martial at which he was sentenced to one hundred lashes. once the flogging was completed, the major returned to his text, “ now where was i? oh, that's right...suffered under pontius pilat. ”

有 一 次 ， 军 队 上 堂 礼 拜 ， 某 连 的 少 校 读 经 ， 浓 浓 的 约 克 郡 口 音 令 一 些 士 兵 感 到 好 笑 。 他 读 到 「 在 庞修 斯 ． 比 拉 多 手 下 受 折 磨 」 等 字 ， 一 个 爱 讲 笑 见 称 的 士 兵 咕 咕 哝 哝 说 ： 「 什 么 是 庞丘 斯 皮 拉 ？ 」 那 少 校 听 到 了 ， 转 头 望 这 罪 人 ： 「 乔 克 ， 又 玩 你 的 老 把 戏 啦 ？ 」 他 当 场 召 开 军 事 法 庭 ， 乔 克 被 判 鞭 笞 一 百 下 。 打 完 之 后 ， 那 少 校 继 续 读 经 ； 「 我 读 到 哪 ？ 啊 ， 对 了 … … 在 庞 修 斯 ． 比 拉 多 手 下 受 折 磨 。 」
【 附 注 】 比 拉 多 是 犹 太 总 督 ， 负 责 审 判 耶 稣 。 church parade 是 军 队 依 规 定 上 堂 礼 拜 的 时 间 ， drumhead court-martial 则 是 即 时 的 军 法 审 判 ， 例 如 ： he was convicted at a drumhead court-martial （ 他 在 当 场 召 开 的 军 事 法 庭 上 被 判 有 罪） 。
