sometimes fate has a curious way of repeating itself. on 21 june 1803, the british succeeded in capturing the french island of st lucia, in the caribbean. during the fighting captain edward pakenham was hit in the neck by a spent bullet, which apparently damaged a nerve so that he was forced to carry his head at an unusual angle.
a few years later, fighting on the island of martinique, pakenham was hit by a spent bullet on the other side of his neck, which had the effect of straightening it out and allowing him to carry his head normally.
however, pakenham's luck ran out in 1815, when he was killed during the british defeat at new orleans.

几 年 后 ， 帕 克 南 在 马 提 尼 克 岛 上 作 战 ， 又 被 一 粒 余 势 将 尽 子 弹 打 中 脖 子 另 一 边 。 这 一 击 把 脖 子 扶 正 了 ， 头 也 恢 复 正 常 位 置 。
不 过 ， 一 八 一 五 年 ， 帕 克 南 不 再 获 命 运 之 神 眷 顾 ， 新 奥 尔 良 一 役 ， 英 军 败 北 ， 他 也 战 死 沙 场 。
【 附 注 】 帕 克 南 是 威 灵 顿 公 爵 的 姻 亲 。 圣 路 西 亚 和 马 提 尼 克 两 次 战 役 ， 英 军 对 手 都 是 法 军 ； 新 奥 尔 良 之 役 ， 对 手 则 是 美 军 。
spend 有 「 耗 尽 （ 气 力 ） 」 的 意 思 ， 例 如 ： i was completely spent after the race （ 我 赛 跑 之 后 ， 疲 倦 极 了 ） 。
