after the battle of waterloo, wounded horses were sold by auction. the famous surgeon sir astley cooper bought twelve, and extracted bullets and grape-shots from the bodies of the suffering animals. after the operations he let them loose in his park in the country. one morning to his delight, he saw the animals form in line, charge and then retreat, and afterwards gallop about, appearing greatly contented with the lot that had befallen them. these manoeuvres were repeated every morning.

【解说】lot的本义是「签」，drawlots即「抽签」，例 如 ： six people were chosen by lot （ 六 个 人 用 抽 签 方 式 选 出 。 ） ， 抽 签 结 果 怎 样 ， 要 看 运 气 ，所 以 lot 也 指 「 命 运 」 ， 例 如 ： he is resigned to his lot, which is always to be the underdog （ 他 注 定 永 远 是 弱 者 ， 而 他 只 有 听 天 由 命 ） 。
befallen 是 befall 的 完 成 式 ， 过 去 式 则 是 befell ， 意 思 是 「 降 临 」 ， 多指 恶 事 降 临 ， 例 如 ： what disaster has fallen (him)? （ 有 甚 么 灾 难 降 临 （ 他 身上 ） 了 ？ ） 这 个 动 词 有 没 有 受 词 （ object ） 都 可 以 ， 一 般 见 于 书 面 ， 不 会 用 于 口头 。
