in 480 bc, the spartan king leonidas, with three hundred of his soldiers, met the invading persian forces at thermopylae. the persian envoy urged him to surrender. "our archers are so numerous that the flight of their arrows darkens the sun," he said. "so much the better," leonidas replied. we'll then fight in the shade." he and his men were subsequently all killed, and their epitaph read: "go, stranger, and tell the spartans that here we lie, obedient to their commands."

斯巴达人以刻苦、刚毅、勇武着称，所以英文常用spartan一字形容这种古斯巴达人作风，例如：（ 1 ） he leads a spartan life in the belief that comfort poisons the mind （ 他 生 活 刻 苦 ， 认 为 安 逸 会 毒 害 心 灵 ） 。 （ 2 ） the passengers complained that the airline put them up in a spartan hotel （ 乘 客 抱 怨 说 ， 航 空 公 司 给 他 们 安 排 的 旅 馆 十 分 简 陋 ） 。
