at the start of the 1800s, a new artillery shell appeared on the battlefields of europe. it was the brainchild of an english officer who had spent 30 years perfecting it. the shell could be launched from long distances at the enemy's lines. when it exploded it cast a deadly shower of metal shards over a wide area.
the british army first used the shell in the napoleonic wars. it so terrified french soldiers that they believed the british had poisoned their cannonballs. sir george wood, commander of the british artillery, credited the shell with playing a critical role in the defeat of napoleon at the battle of waterloo.
the name of the man who invented the shell became known around the world: henry shrapnel.

*shrapel现在指炮弹爆出的碎片,是不可数名词( uncountable noun),例如: the soldier was badly wounded in the chest by shrapnel(那士兵胸部遭炮弹碎片重创)。
