in 1808, there were widespread uprisings against the french occupation of spain, and napoleon sent troops to pacify the major centres of resistance. in june 1808, as french soldiers were marching through valdepenas, the village rose up in arms.
as there were insufficient men in the village, a 20-year-old girl, juana galan, took to the street to fight in hand-to-hand combat with the french cavalry, armed with a club. the other women poured hot water and boiling oil or vinegar on the french. the fighting lasted from morning till evening, and eventually the french withdrew. this delay facilitated the spanish victory in the battle of bailen in july.
juana galan, who became a local heroine overnight, got married in 1810, and died in childbirth in 1812. there is a statue of her in valdepenas, her hand holding a club.
