in 1861, american confederate commander john magruder, despite a fondness for alcoholic refreshment, absolutely forbade soldiers from bringing liquor into camp. one day, suspecting that a certain private sharpe was toting a liquor-laden canteen, he asked for a taste of the man's "water".
taking a draught, he quickly returned the canteen - and promoted the terrified private to the rank of corporal. some time later, magruder, having taken another drink, returned sharpe's canteen with another promotion: "you are no longer corporal sharpe, sir. you are sergeant sharpe!"
sharpe was dismayed, however, when having attained the rank of lieutenant his supply of alcohol ran out. when magruder called for a drink, the dejected sharpe replied, "general, it is played out, and i am sorry for it, for if it had held out i'll be dammed if i would not have been made a brigadier general before night!"

但 夏 普 官 拜 中 尉 之 后 ， 酒 已 喝 光 了 ， 令 他 非 常沮 丧 。 马 格 鲁 德 又 向 他 要 水 壶 的 时 候 ， 他 垂 头 丧 气 说 ： 「 将 军 ， 已 经 没 有 了 ， 真 可惜 。 假 如 还 有 ， 入 夜 之 前 我 不 升 做 准 将 才 怪 ！ 」
【 附 注 】 tote 是 美 国 俚 语 ， 指 「 携 带 」 ， 例 如 ： he toted the suitcase into the house （ 他 把 手 提 箱 拿 进 屋 ） 。
