frederick the great became king of prussia in 1740, after an extraordinarily severe childhood at the hands of his father frederick william i. he at once made preparations for the invasion of the prosperous austrian province of silesia. but he was very secretive about his military planning, not even taking his most senior officers into his confidence. his old tutor, christoph von kalckstein, once tried to prise some information from him. "your majesty," he said, "am i right in thinking there is going to be a war?"
"who can tell?" answered frederick.
"the movement seems to be directed on silesia," kalckstein said.

"can you keep a secret?" asked frederick.
"oh yes, your majesty."
"well, so can i."

【附 注 】 take a person into one's confidence 是 「 把 私 事 或 秘 密 告 诉 某 人 」 ， 例如 ： he was betrayed by the man he had taken into his confidence （ 他 被 他当 作 心 腹 的 人 出 卖 了 ） 。
