one of the greatest commanders ever to lead troops, the duke of wellington was famous for his concern for his soldiers and his astonishing coolness under fire.
at waterloo, after hours of the bloodiest fighting, he was riding by the side of lord uxbridge, his second-in-command, when a cannonball, having passed first over the withers of the duke's charger, smashed uxbridge's knee into bloody junk.
uxbridge looked down, and remarked almost casually to the duke:"by god, i've lost my leg."
the duke, equally cool, glanced over at uxbridge."have you, by god!" he dismounted and helped uxbridge down and then returned to the business of beating the french. after the battle, this iron man would break into tears over the terrible losses among his troops.
