during world warⅡ, hundreds of thousands of american servicemen were shipped out to britain. the us army was then still a segregated force, but most britons saw no reason to discriminate against blacks, and some tried to break the ice.
a somerset woman remembered being at a dance when a group of black gis arrived."no one talked to them," she recalled."we thought it was very rude, and my sister and i and some friends went over to ask them to dance, which they did."
children recognised no colour distinctions and were favoured by americans of all ranks. the wife of a dorset farm worker, for instance, discovered that though she had banned her small son from asking for sweets, he still managed to come home with his pockets stuffed full of candy and chocolate simply by saying"hello" to the passing gis.

小孩子不会区分黑人白人,也得到各级美国军人喜爱。多塞特郡一位农场工人的妻子,曾嘱咐小儿子不要向人家讨糖果,有一次却发觉他回家时,口袋塞满了糖果和巧克力,而他只是向路过的美国军人说了声「哈啰」而已。
