in the battle of britain, the german luftwaffe subjected the british to a sustained air attack. cuthbert douse recalls helping to dig his grandmother out of a rubble in glasgow:"we had to dig with our hands but her arm was jammed by the windowsill. my father told me to turn away because the only way to get her out was to pull. he pulled three of her fingers off getting her out."
len jones recalls his experience in london:"the suction and compression from the high-explosive blasts just pulled and pushed you. you could feel your eyeballs being sucked out." bomb blast, people would learn, could rip victims limb from limb, or leave them unharmed but stripped naked.

when a parachute bomb smashed through the london palladium's roof to dangle, still live, in the wings, a naval officer defused it. he was rewarded with free tickets to the palladium for life.
