in september 1940, the german luftwaffe began to attack london. daylight raids proving too costly, the germans turned to night attacks, and night after night bombs rained down.
it is not possible to record all the self-sacrifice that the ordinary british people made for the common good: women fire-fighters who stood their ground while buildings were crumbling all around them; teenagers who toiled for hours helping move the rubble in the search for survivors; pensioners ready to die firing a shotgun at the enemy"as long as i take one with me". and as a gesture of defiance, the royal family remained in london, putting themselves at risk of being blown to bits every night, and winning the loyalty of the people.

churchill was right when he said in june 1940 that future generations would look back and say,"this was their finest hour."
一九四○年九月,德国空军开始攻击伦敦。白天轰炸代价太大,就转为晚间轰炸,炸弹夜夜雨点般落下。
英国老百姓为大我忘却小我的事迹,多不胜书:女消防员眼看四周建筑物随时坍塌,毫不退缩;十多岁少年男女不辞劳苦,连续几小时不停手,协助搬开瓦砾,搜寻生还者;退休的老人拿着鸟枪向敌人开火,「只要能杀一个陪葬」就死也甘心。而为免示弱,国王一家晚晚冒着炸得粉身碎骨危险,留在伦敦,赢得了国民爱戴。
一九四○年六月,丘吉尔说:后人回顾历史,会说「那是他们最光辉的时刻」。这话一点不错。
