stonewall jackson later chided ewell for his noble sentiments. "shoot the brave officers," he astutely remarked, "and the cowards will run away and take their men with them."
美国内战期间，南军将领尤厄尔见北军一位骑兵军官奋不顾身鼓舞麾下将士作战，敬他英勇，下令不要向他开枪。
但尤厄尔光风霁月的胸怀，却换得「石壁」杰克逊一顿训斥。杰克逊一针见血的指出：「打死勇敢的军官，怕死的就会带手下望风而逃。」
【附注】杰克逊是南军高级将领，也是美国历代最出色军事家之一。他在强敌猛攻之下仍能坚守阵地，赢得「石壁」的绰号。

说「勇敢」，英文一般用bravery一字，gallantry是比较庄严的说法，带「英勇无私」含义，形容词是gallant，例如： the gallant fireman died to save the little boy （ 那 勇 敢 的 消 防 员 舍 身 救 了 小 男 孩 ） 。
gallant 、 gallantry 的另 一 个 常 见 意 思 ， 是 对 女 人 彬 彬 有 礼 ， 照 顾 周 到 ， 例 如 ： many women like him because of his gallantry （ 他 对 女 性 彬 彬 有 礼 ， 不 少 女 人 都 喜 欢 他 ） 。 西 方 中世 纪 武 士 对 敌 要 勇 敢 ， 对 女 人 要 温 柔 ， 所 以 chivalry （ 武 士 精 神 ） 和 形 容 词 chivalrous 也 有 「 对 女 人 彬 彬 有 礼 」 的 意 思 。
