in the 1960s, when the cold war was at its height, the cia tried to turn cats into bugs for listening in on soviet diplomats in public places. a battery and a microphone were implanted into a cat, and an antenna into its tail. and to prevent it from wandering off in search of food, the cia implanted a device to suppress the cat's sense of hunger. the cat was trained to approach selected individuals on command. the training and testing went well.
the cat's first mission was eavesdropping on two soviet diplomats in a park across the soviet compound in washington, dc. the cat was released nearby, and it was crossing the street when it was run over by a taxi and killed. "project acoustic kitty", which involved five years of work and the expenditure of $14 million, died with the cat.

窃 听 猫 的 第 一 个 任 务 ， 是 窃 听 华 盛 顿 苏 联 使 馆 对 面 公 园 里 两 个 苏 联 外 交 官 的 谈 话 。 中 情 局 人 员 在 公 园 附 近 把 猫 放 出 。 窃 听 猫 过 马 路 的 时 候 ， 给 一 辆 的 士 撞 死 了 。 「 声 波 猫 计 划 」 花 了 五 年 工 作 以 及 一 千 四 百 万 美 元 ， 就 此 和 猫 的 性 命 一 起 结 束 。
