at the outbreak of the first world war, both the british and german navies were in such skimpy shape that they decided to convert some of their superposh ocean liners into warships despite the liners' lack of range. the german cap trafalgar removed one of her great funnels and disguised herself as the british liner carmania so that she might get close to an enemy ship and attack it with short-range machine guns. by sheer coincidence the carmania disguised herself as the cap trafalgar. they made the alternations as they sailed on towards a destiny that must have seemed improbable: the two ships happened upon each other off the brazilian island of trindade.

the battle of the luxury liners commenced. the carmania was the victor, and the cap trafalgar went down in a sea of sharks.
