called the scourge of god by the romans, attila was leader of the hun empire from 433 to 453 ad. during his rule he was one of the most fearsome of the western and eastern roman empires' anemies.
in 452 ad, attila invaded italy. the huns sacked and burned numerous cities. but unintentionally they also did one thing: they helped found the city of venice.
fleeing from the carnage and destruction on the mainland, some roman citizens took to the swamps, finding sanctuary in a desolate group of more than 100 islands in the venetian lagoon. over the centuries, they transformed the inhospitable surroundings into a centre of commerce and tourism.
