the commander-in-chief of the british army in the second half of the 19th century, the duke of cambridge （ a grandson of george Ⅲ ） , was not renowned for his intelligence. he had served as a divisional commander in the crimean war. once, accompanying the legendary florence nightingale around the wards of a hospital in the crimea, cambridge recognised a sergeant who had served in his division. the man had suffered appalling wounds and, addressing him by name, the duke jokingly inquired, “ aren't you dead yet? ”
after the duke had left, the man told nightingale, “ so feeling of his royal highness, wasn't it, madam? bless his heart, he wondered why i'm not dead yet! ”
十九 世 纪 下 半 叶 英 军 统 帅 剑 桥 公 爵 是 乔 治 三 世 的 孙 子 ， 不 以 有 脑 筋 见 称 。 他 曾 在 克 里米 亚 战 争 中 担 任 师 长 ， 有 一 次 ， 陪 伴 着 名 的 芙 罗 伦 斯 ． 南 丁 格 尔 巡 视 克 里 米 亚 一 所医 院 的 病 房 ， 看 见 曾 经 隶 属 他 那 个 师 的 一 名 中 士 。 那 中 士 受 了 重 伤 ， 剑 桥 直 呼 他 的名 字 ， 打 趣 说 ： 「 你 还 未 死 吗 ？ 」
剑 桥 离 去 后 ， 中 士 跟 南 丁 格 尔 说 ： 「 姑 娘 ， 公 爵 真 富 同 情 心 ， 对 吗 ？ 嘿 ， 他 不 明 白 我 怎 么 还 未 死 去 ！ 」
【附 注 】 克 里 米 亚 战 争 （ 1853-56 ） 是 英 、 法 、 土 耳 其 、 萨 丁 尼 亚 四 国 和 俄 国 的 战 争， 双 方 死 伤 惨 重 。 南 丁 格 尔 到 战 地 照 顾 伤 兵 ， 成 为 护 士 制 度 创 始 人 。
royal highness 是 对 王 子 、 公 主 的 尊 称 ， 例 如 his royal highness, prince charles 是「 查 理 太 子 殿 下 」 。 bless my （ 或 your 、 his 等 ） heart 则 是 感 叹 语 ， 没 有 特 别意 思 。
