the duke of marlborough, commander of british and dutch troops in the war of the spanish succession （ 1701-14 ） , won a series of victories over the french armies under louis xiv, ending louis's attempts to dominate europe.
in 1704, just after winning the battle of blenheim, marlborough observed a soldier leaning thoughfully on the butt of his firelock, and accosted him thus: "why so sad, my friend, after so glorious a victory?" "it may be glorious, my lord," replied the fellow, "but i am thinking how much blood i have spilled this day for fourpence." fourpence was a private soldier's daily pay at that time.

一 七 ○ 四 年 ， 莱 尼 姆 之 役 胜 利 后 ， 马 尔 伯 勒 看 见 一 个 士 兵 倚 燧 发 枪 托 ， 若 有 所 思 ， 就 上 前 问 那 士 兵 ： 「 朋 友 ， 这 一 仗 赢 得 那 样 漂 亮 ， 你 为 什 么还 那 样 忧 郁 ？ 」 那 士 兵 回 答 ： 「 公 爵 ， 这 一 仗 也 许 赢 得 漂 亮 ， 但 我 在 想 ， 为 了 四 便士 ， 我 今 天 手 上 染 了 多 少 血 。 」 当 时 二 等 兵 每 天 的 工 资 是 四 便 士 。
【 附 注 】 accost 指 上 前 和 别 人 说 话 ， 一 般 是 不 相 识 的 人 ， 例 如 ： a beggar accosted him, asking for money （ 一 个 乞 丐 走 上 前 ， 向 他 讨 钱 ） 。 spill 是 「 （ 使 ） 流 出 」 ，例 如 ： water spilled from the cup （ 水 从 杯 中 溢 出 ） 。 to spill blood （ 使 流血 ） 即 杀 人 或 伤 人 ， 例 如 ： lots of blood has been spilled over religion （为 了 宗 ， 人 类 历 来 死 伤 无 算 ） ， spilled 也 作 spilt 。
