during the "phoney war" in 1940, a german bomber crashed in clacton-on-sea, england, killing its crew of four germans. the war was so new that anti-german sentiments were not strong. the german dead were borne to the local cemetry with full military honours supplied by the raf,and women sobbed for them. their coffins were covered with wreaths, some of which bore the words:"with heartfelt sympathy from a mother."
一九四○年「假战」期间，一架德国轰炸机在英国滨海克拉克顿坠毁，四名机员全部丧生。那时开战未久，反德情绪不强，那些德军遗体被送到当地坟场，由英国皇家空军负责，依足军礼下葬，妇女还为他们哭泣。他们的棺材上堆满花圈，其中有些写：「一名母亲由衷哀悼。」
【解说】第二次世界大战初期，德国吞波兰、灭挪威，战火少及英国，英国人因称为「假战」，民间对德国人仇恨不深，所以有上述故事。
上 文 的 borne 和 bore 都 是 bear 的 变 体 ， bore 是 过 去 式 ， borne 是 完 成 式 。 bear 可 以 解 作 「 抬 运 」 或 「 带 有 」 ， 文 中 两 句 都 是 例 子 ， 此 外 ， 还 可 解 作 「 生 （孩 子 、 果 实 等 ） 」 ， 但 这 个 意 思 的 bear ， 完 成 式 有 两 个 写 法 ： born 、 borne 。 borne 用 在 说 明 「 由 某 某 所 生 」 的 句 子 ， born 则 用 于 不 说 生 产 者 的 被 动 语 态 （ passive voice ） 句 子 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） she has borne two children/two children have been borne by her （ 她 生 了两 个 孩 子 ） 。 （ 2 ） i was born in 1922 （ 我 是 一 九 二 二 年 出 生 的 ） 。
