during world warⅡ, a host of hollywood stars participated in entertaining servicemen, and many detected a no-nonsense attitude in their audience. too much high-minded talk did not go down well.
edward robinson, entertaining american airmen at one base, had an awkward moment."i am happy," he said,"to be here, the most privileged moment of my life, to see the men who are defeating hitler." he could sense the audience despising him. so the actor instinct took over, and to stop their boos, he ad-libbed,"pipe down, you mugs, or i'll let you have it." there was an instant outburst of laughter and applause.

bob hope, another troop entertainer, took risks with his gags even when visiting wounded servicemen. to a room full of gis in traction, he once remarked,"ok, fellas, don't get up!"
