in 1548, french troops arrived in leith, scotland, in support of the pro-catholic scottish government. they did not leave till 1560, when the english came to assist the insurgent protestants.
during the english siege of leith, scottish prostitutes, unwilling to see the french garrison driven out, with the subsequent loss of business, inflicted heavy losses on the english attackers by throwing down rocks, timber, and other heavy objects.
but the english had their revenge. when it was suggested that the women and children should be allowed to leave leith because of a shortage of food, the english commander refused to allow it, saying that these women should stay within the city and help to eat up leith's fast-diminishing food supply.

【附注】 insurgency和 revolt都是「造反」,但 revolt多指反抗压迫, insurgency则多指为夺取政权而发动的叛乱,比 revolt较有组织,例如: the insurgent forces laid siege to the capital(叛军围攻首都)。
