in december 1944, the germans launched their last serious counteroffensive against allied armies. at the belgian town of bastogne, the 101st airborne division under the command of us general anthony mcauliffe was besieged by a far larger force of germans.
the german commander sent an ultimatum to mcauliffe requesting that he surrender honourably to avoid inevitable defeat. mcauliffe's response was:"nuts!" his aide commented that the germans might require something more official. so the official reply was typed and delivered to the german delegation:"to the german commander,/ nuts!/ the american commander." mcauliffe's aide had to explain the meaning of the word to the germans, telling them that in"plain english" it meant"go to hell".

the 101st was able to hold off the german assault until reinforcements arrived.
麦奥利夫的回答是:「 nuts(发神经)!」
