in 1945, with the soviet army rapidly advancing into germany, werner von braun, the german rocket physicist who invented the v-2, asked his staff to whom they should surrender. afraid of soviet cruelty to prisoners of war, they decided to surrender to the americans.
knowing that their ss guards had orders to execute them should they be in danger of falling into enemy hands, von braun convinced ss major kummer to disperse the team into nearby villages, supposedly to avoid american bombs. when the americans finally arrived, von braun was able to surrender his entire team of rocket engineers and all the technology they had invented for the nazis. they were promptly whisked away to the us, where they developed a rocket that could send men to the moon.
