princess alice, mother-in-law of queen elizabethⅡ of the united kingdom, was born deaf. she married prince andrew of greece in 1903. after the outbreak of world warⅡ, the germans occupied greece. princess alice stayed in athens while the greek royal family were in exile in south africa.
during the german occupation, princess alice hid in her home jews seeking to evade the death camps. there were times when the germans became suspicious, and she was even interviewed by the gestapo. using her deafness, she pretended not to understand their questions until they left her alone. as she had two sons-in-law fighting on the german side, one german general came to her and asked,"is there anything i can do for you?" she replied,"you can take your troops out of my country."

艾丽斯公主是英国女王伊莉萨白二世的婆婆,天生失聪,一九○三年和希腊王子安德鲁结婚。第二次世界大战爆发后,德军侵占希腊。艾丽斯公主留在雅典,希腊王室则流亡南非。
希腊遭占领期间,艾丽斯公主让逃避死亡集中营的犹太人躲在她家里。德国人有时起疑,盖世太保甚至找她问话。艾丽斯公主以失聪作掩饰,假装不明白他们的问题,盖世太保终于不再烦她了。由于艾丽斯公主有两个女婿为德国打仗,一个德军将领登门问她:「有什么事要我效劳吗?」她回答:「劳烦你把军队撤出我国吧。」
