a most important medical advance in history began by accident. one morning in 1928, professor alexander fleming of london university noticed in his cluttered laboratory that a mould had developed accidentally on a staphylococcus culture plate, and that the mould had created a bacteria-free circle around itself. after further research, he found that the mould could kill other bacteria as well as staphylocci. he called the mould penicillin.
during world war ii, a team of scientists searching for a way to treat infected wounds experimented with penicillin and found its powers miraculous. they developed it further so that it could be produced as a drug. the drug saved many lives that would have been lost due to bacterial infections in even minor wounds.

第 二 次 世 界 大 战 期 间 , 一 组 科 学 家 要 设 法 治 疗 受 细 菌 感 染 的 伤 口 。 他 们 用 盘 尼 西 林 做 实 验 , 发 觉 功 效 如 神 , 于 是 继 续 研 究 、 发 展 , 以 便 制 成 药 物 。 当 时 不 是 有 这 种 新 药 , 很 多 人 就 会 因 伤 口 受 细 菌 感 染 而 死 亡 , 即 使 只 是 轻 伤 。
