he drilled his warriors rigorously and forced them to go bare-footed, which allowed them to run faster and surprise the enemy. he made them run on beds of thorns, and any man who cried cut in pain was killed.

starting with just 1,500 people under his rule, shaka ended up ruling a population of more than 250,000.
