since 1904, it has been the custom of the us senate to present a copy of the jefferson bible to each freshman senator at the swearing-in ceremony.
the jefferson bible is strictly speaking the third us president's redaction of the four gospels. while jefferson valued the ethical teachings of jesus, he purged the gospels of all supernatural words, actions and events. the jesus of this book was not god, but simply a man who performs no miracles, does not proclaim himself the son of god, and does not rise to heaven after dying on the cross. jefferson thought all these things had been added through the "stupidity" or "roguery" of jesus' disciples.
but jefferson never allowed his bible to be published during his lifetime.

his bible was not published until many years after his death.

严 格 而 言 ， 《 杰 克 逊 圣 经 》 是 四 福 音 的 修 订 版 ， 修 订 者 是 美 国 第 三 任 总 统 杰 克 逊 。 他 推 崇 耶 稣 的 德 ， 但 把 四 福 音 所 述 神 奇 言 行 、 事 一 律 删 去 。 书 中 的 耶 稣 不 是 上 帝 ， 而 只 是 个 凡 人 ， 没 有 神 ， 没 有 自 称 是 上 帝 之 子 ， 死 在 十 字 架 上 之 后 也 没 有 升 天 。 杰 克 逊 认 为 ， 那 一 切 都 是 耶 稣 门 徒 加 上 去 的 ， 或 因 「 愚 蠢 」 ， 或 因 「 欺 诈 」 。
但 杰 克 逊 生 前 始 终 不 肯 出 版 这 本 《 圣 经 》 。 他 的 《 圣 经 》 要 到 他 死 后 多 年 才 付 梓 。
