while working as a correspondent during world war i, american writer irvin cobb was sent to belgium to cover the german invasion. on their way to the belgian army headquarters in a taxi one day, he and several colleagues were captured by german soldiers and detained for questioning.
when the interrogation dragged through the night and into the following day, cobb grew agitated. "sir," he finally called to their captor, "whether or not you intend to shoot us, will you at least grant us one request?"
"what is that?" the officer asked.
"will you please," cobb replied, "tell the driver of our taxicab to stop the meter?"

【附 注 】 taxi 和 tax （ 税 ） 同 样 出 自 拉 丁 文 taxare 一 字 ， 都 有 「 征 收 费 用 」 含 义 ，所 以 的 士 的 收 费 计 叫 taximeter 。 的 士 的 全 名 是 taximeter cab ， 现 在 一 般 略 作 taxicab 、 taxi 或 cab 。
