wary of invading the persian empire, croesus, king of lydia, consulted the oracle at delphi, which replied that if he went to war, he would destroy a great empire.
thus encouraged, he promptly attacked the persians, who proceeded to throttle the lydians, capture their capital, and throw croesus into prison. understandably aggrieved, croesus sent a delegation to delphi demanding to know why the oracle had deceived him.
the oracle's reply was simple. apollo had hardly deceived him. croesus had indeed destroyed a great empire: his own.

克里 萨 斯 胆 子 壮 了 ， 马 上 进 侵 波 斯 。 波 斯 把 里 底 亚 军 队 打 得 一 败 涂 地 ， 还 攻 占 里 底 亚首 都 ， 抓 了 克 里 萨 斯 入 狱 。 克 里 萨 斯 当 然 不 胜 愤 恨 ， 遣 代 表 团 到 特 耳 菲 ， 质 问 神 示所 为 什 么 骗 他 。

神 示 所 的 回 答 很 简 单 。 阿 波 罗 神 没 有 骗 他 。 克 里 萨 斯 的 确 摧 毁 了 一 个 大 帝 国 ： 他 自 己 的 帝 国 。
【附 注 】 oracle 是 「 神 示 所 」 ， 也 可 以 指 代 神 回 答 问 题 的 祭 司 。 古 希 腊 神 殿 之 中 ，最 着 名 的 是 希 腊 南 部 特 耳 菲 城 那 座 阿 波 罗 神 庙 ， 称 为 delphic oracle 。
