during the battle of crecy between the english and the french in 1346, the 16-year-old prince of wales commanded one english division. as the french knights came to hand-to-hand fighting with the prince's men-at-arms, it seemed at one stage that the prince's men might be defeated. a knight was therefore sent to the prince's father, edward Ⅲ , who was posted on an eminence, asking him to come to his son's assistance with his battalion. the king asked, "is my son dead, unhorsed, or so badly wounded that he cannot support himself?"
"nothing of the sort, thank god," rejoined the knight.

"now, sir thomas, return to those that sent you, and tell them not to expect that i shall come as long as my son has life. let the boy win his spurs."
一三 四 六 年 ， 英 、 法 在 克 雷 西 交 战 ， 十 六 岁 的 威 尔 斯 王 子 率 领 一 师 英 军 ， 和 法 国 武 士短 兵 相 接 ， 一 度 似 乎 会 落 败 。 王 子 的 父 亲 爱 德 华 三 世 当 时 驻 跸 高 处 ， 一 名 武 士 奉 命去 请 他 率 大 军 增 援 。 爱 德 华 问 ： 「 我 儿 子 是 不 是 死 了 ， 是 不 是 从 马 上 摔 了 下 来 ， 是不 是 伤 得 站 不 起 来 了 ？ 」
那 武 士 回 答 ： 「 都 不 是 ， 谢 天 谢 地 。 」
「 那 么 ， 汤 玛 斯 爵 士 ， 回 到 派 你 来 这 的 人 身 边 ， 告 诉 他 们 说 ， 只 要 我 儿 子 还 活 ， 我 就 不 会 来 。 那 孩 子 必 须 自 己 建 立 功 勋 。 」

【附 注 】 spur 是 「 马 靴 刺 」 ， 古 时 战 士 因 功 获 封 为 骑 士 ， 叫 做 to win one's spurs ， 后 来 引 伸 解 作 「 建 立 功 勋 」 。 爱 德 华 的 话 ， 激 起 英 军 斗 志 ， 终 于 打 败 了 法 军 。
